THE MOUNT SACCARELLO
Up above Verdeggia at about two thousands meters high there is the majestic "Redentore sul monte Saccarello" ("the Redeemer up to the Mount Saccarello"), made out of gold cast iron, placed on an artistic pedestal made out of stone, it is the heart of the entire Valley in sign of protection. It was put up there in 1901 after a long journey from Paris. The long journey was by train first and then by wagon and the year after was lifted up to the pedestal with help of Italian Army.
The monument was restored in 1980, after a hand had broken by lightning and felt down for many kilometres. And it’s very nice to spend together, every year the first Sunday of August a different emotion with this amazing environment. At the Saccarello are settled the skiing installation of Monesi di Triora, an important winter tourist centre still to be exploited. There is the possibility to join the coast to the inland, to reach, in one hour time by car, the highest point of Liguria Region, mantled of snow ideal for skiing; it could be coined the so known slogan "From the sea to the mountain in sixty minutes", giving life back to what in the 60’s was a reason to call it "The small Switzerland in Liguria Region". |
